Thanks, Dad?

Every single father I know has feared the public reaction & misinterpretation of raising a daughter. Normal things like bath time, potty training and purchasing her first panties put dads under a lot of scrutiny — as do the upcoming matters of menstruation & training bras. But I guess being a wealthy single dad insulates you emotionally from that sort of thing because Larry Birkhead had to know the media would get wind of his heirloom purchase for daughter Dannielynn.

Anna Nicole Smith’s former boyfriend spent nearly $3,000 at a celebrity auction Saturday scooping up lingerie once worn in a Playboy shoot by the late playmate.

Birkhead said he is trying to make sure his 1-year-old daughter, Dannielynn, has something to remember her mother by.

“I have a lot of history I have to put together that she doesn’t really know about,” Birkhead told The Associated Press. “Playboy was such a big part of Anna’s career.”

Birkhead bought a pink bustier for $1,800 and a white negligee for $1,000 at the auction, run by Julien’s Auctions and held at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

As for the rest of us, we all have our own historical lingerie worthy of being family heirlooms…

slips with lacy hems which lured dad over to mom to ask her out…

nighties worn just before the children were conceived…

corsets, panties and other garments given by dad to make up for some idiotic mistake…

(And I bet there are more than a few photos lying around of mom in those things too — provenance you know *wink*)

But we regular folks don’t exactly box that up for the kids, now do we?

I’m not sure if Birkhead’s creepy or if we’re wrong not to do such things ourselves. My kids likely vote he’s creepy — and hope that dad and I burn all those photos we’ve taken.
